IRIS versicolor 'Claret Cup'

Image of Iris versicolor 'Claret Cup'

Family

Iridaceae

Botanical Name

IRIS versicolor 'Claret Cup'

Plant Common Name

Claret Cup Flag, Harlequin Blueflag

General Description

A lovely form of the Northern blue flag iris, 'Claret Cup' adds diversity to the wild and water garden with its unusually-colored flowers of rich, violet-red.

Occurring naturally in bogs and swamps, Iris versicolor is found over a broad range from Canada to Virginia and west to Minnesota. The thick, fleshy roots (rhizomes) of this cold-hardy perennial produce long, narrow, upright foliage with a somewhat arching form. Beautiful, violet-blue flowers bloom on tall stems in late spring.

Iris versicolor prefers constant moisture, and may even be planted up to four inches deep in standing water. This sun-loving iris develops into large colonies over time, making it an excellent choice for creating dramatic sweeps of spring color at the edge of ponds and bog gardens.
