ISOTOMA fluviatilis

Jessie Keith

Family

Campanulaceae

Botanical Name

ISOTOMA fluviatilis

Plant Common Name

Blue Starcreeper

General Description

This delightful little mat-like groundcover looks delicate, but it is surprisingly resilient and very fast-growing. Blue starcreeper originates from Australia and New Zealand, which explains its popularity in California where the climate is quite similar. It is a true creeper that has fine stems covered with small, flat, green leaves. The stems root as they travel and are quite tolerant of foot traffic, which makes it a perfect compliment to walkways lined with stepping stones.

Blue starcreeper blooms heaviest in spring, then again more modestly in early summer with a scattering through the rest of the warmer months. Its tiny, star-shaped blue flowers are quite charming, particularly in smaller gardens where they can be appreciated close up.

Full to partial sun and average to fertile soil with good drainage are ideal for this little groundcover. While drought tolerant, it tends to turn yellow if it gets too dry, so provide supplemental water in extended periods of drought. It is traditionally sold in flats, which can be cut into individual pieces. Use this creeper to cover bare ground at the front of the border or beneath older shrubs or large container specimens.
