Family

Oleaceae

Botanical Name

JASMINUM angulare

Plant Common Name

Jasmine

General Description

This jasmine is a shrubby, twining, evergreen species native to the warm, maritime regions of South Africa. From early summer into fall, it bears clusters of large, starry white flowers that perfume the air with their sweet scent. The blooms appear on long stems covered with glossy, deep green, divided foliage which is composed of three to five smaller leaflets.

South African jasmine is perennial in temperate, frost-free climates. It grows well in full to part sun and fertile, reasonably moist, well-drained soil. Additional shade may be beneficial where summer temperatures are very hot. Highly versatile, this lovely plant may be pruned as a shrub, used as a groundcover, trained to climb a fence or allowed to cascade over a retaining wall. Be sure to plant it where its wonderful fragrance can be enjoyed at close range.
