General Description

A widely variable, clambering shrubby vine (or vine-like shrub), the elongate jasmine has "ear-like" leaves and fragrant white flowers during the warm months. This tropical, frost-tender evergreen is native to an expansive area of Asia, from India and China southeastward all the way to northern Australia.

The dark green leaves are very glossy when young, but become satiny to matte as they mature. They are arranged opposite each other on the stems. Each leaf blade is an elongated oval with yellow veins and a pointed tip. Anytime from mid-spring to late fall, stem tips produce a loose cluster of fragrant white, tubular flowers. Six to nine narrow petals occur on each flower, looking like angelic stars. Some plants have fuzzy rose-pink buds that open white. By late summer to winter, glossy black fruits are ripe, shaped like pointed grapes.

Grow the elongated jasmine in full sun to bright partial shade in a frost-free garden. It grows best in a non-alkaline, fertile, moist but well-drained soil that is enriched with some organic matter. Trim vines in early spring to help train growth on a trellis or wall. Otherwise it will climb over anything in order to reach light. Remove seedlings to prevent a weedy infestation of the vine in the garden.
