General Description
Prized for its delightfully fragrant flowers, pink jasmine is a fast-growing evergreen vine native to China. It is a popular landscape or houseplant, and the aromatic oil of its flowers is extracted for perfume.
The long, twining stems of this ornamental are woody, angular and clothed with lush, green, feathery compound leaves. These are typically evergreen but may be semi-evergreen in cooler climates. Flowering is heaviest from late winter to spring but can occur sporadically throughout the year, if growing conditions are favorable. Its super fragrant, starry, tubular flowers are borne in big, spidery clusters. They are dark pink in bud and snowy white when fully open. Dark black-blue berries follow the flowers.
Fast-growing and easy to cultivate, pink jasmine is drought tolerant once established and prefers full to partial sun. If grown indoors, bright filtered light is required. It grows best in fertile, well-drained soil and will flower the most vigorously if given occasional applications of water during dry months. Though quite cold sensitive, it will tolerate mild freezing temperatures for short periods. Prune regularly to control the size and shape of this plant.
This twining vine is a perfect choice for planting along fences and pergolas.
Grow it near decks, pools and meditation gardens where its pleasant, sweet scent may be fully appreciated.
Jasminum polyanthum was give the Royal Horticulture Society’s Award of Garden Merit in 1993. However, it can be a rampant, aggressive vine. It has escaped from cultivation in many subtropical areas and is considered an invasive species.
