General Description

A variable woody plant that may be grown as a spreading shrub or an upright vine, wax jasmine is loved for its glossy leaves and fragrant white flowers. This frost-tender tropical evergreen is native to the wet and dry coastal rainforests of Australia, from northern Western Australia to eastern New South Wales.

The pointed oval leaves are a rich jade green and are attractively glossy. They occur in opposite pairs on branches. Stem tips develop loose clusters of white flowers most heavily in the warm dry tropical winter season, but may continue into spring. Each flower is tubular with five to eight petal lobes, resembling stars. Following pollination, shiny black fruits are produced.

Grow the wax jasmine in any fertile, well-drained soil that is acidic to slightly alkaline in pH. Organic matter and even moisture ensures the fastest and lushest growth, but this shrubby vine is moderately drought tolerant. Prune it to maintain it as a wide hedge or singular spreading shrub specimen in the mixed border. Alternatively, trim it to encourage more upright growth and very long stems on a tall trellis or arbor.
