General Description

Super tough yet lush and beautiful, 'Ames' is valued as evergreen hedge material with marked tolerance of drying winds. Its parent is a highly variable evergreen shrub native to much of China where it can reach tree like proportions. The extreme variability of Juniperus chinensis has resulted in many cultivars featuring different growth habits, sizes and colors. Thick scaled leaves of 'Ames' are green, but may take on bronze tones in winter. They are well packed onto upright cone-shaped plants that mature to more irregular shaped adults.

The small, purple berry-like fruit (on female plants) is abundant and relished by wildlife. Grow in full sun and any type of soil so long as it is well-drained. This is an exceptional choice for cold climate hedges and screens either natural in shape or sheared into more formal looks. It is also favored for windbreaks and shelterbelts.
