Juniperus chinensis 'Armstrongii'
Armstrong's Chinese Juniper, Chinese Juniper
The beautiful soft foliage and spreading form of 'Armstrongii' make it an attractive evergreen shrub for the landscape. It dwarf and has prickly juvenile foliage that becomes soft and scaled as it matures. The true identity of this cultivar is under scrutiny. Some maintain it is a Juniperus chinensis cultivar, while others believe it is a pfitzer juniper, which is a Juniperus sabina and Juniperus chinensis cross.
Pfitzer junipers are useful plants with a solid evergreen constitution. They grow in virtually any soil type provided it is well drained. All share marked drought tolerance and have become a panacea for drought ravaged landscaping. The juniper is a time honored staple for parking lot plantings, banks and slopes and highway landscaping. Be aware that this is not a suitable plant for high wildfire hazard zones as it contains volatile oils.
