Juniperus chinensis 'Aurea'
Chinese Juniper, Golden Chinese Juniper
Many believe this is the most beautiful of all golden columnar junipers because its foliage is equally bright in summer and winter. Asian in origin, this cultivar was discovered as a branch sport in around 1855 at Maurice Young's nursery, Milford, Godalming, Surrey, England. It has a tall, pyramidal form and prickly scale-like leaves that become stiffer when mature. The sport arose from a male plant, so this is not a berry producing selection.
Chinese juniper prefers full sun and grows in any soil type provided it is well-drained. Excessive moisture in the root zone can kill a plant. This shrub will enliven the winter landscape with its pretty gold color. It takes well to pruning and shearing but looks best with its natural form. It is preferred for foundation plantings, windbreaks or use as a landscape specimen. It is a slow growing selection that will not aggressively overtake areas. To preserve its beauty, protect ‘Aurea’ from direct afternoon sun and cold winter winds.
