Juniperus chinensis 'Blue Vase'
Chinese Juniper
The upright, vase-shaped form and lovely, light blue foliage of juniper 'Blue Vase' make it an ideal choice for numerous landscape situations. The dense, minty-blue foliage scales of this attractive, evergreen shrub are prickly in youth, but smooth out with maturity. ‘Blue Vase’ is derived from Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis), a highly variable species found throughout most of China, whose diversity of form has led to the creation of numerous cultivars of different shapes, sizes and color variations.
Chinese juniper are dioecious, meaning that fruit is borne only on female plants, but most named cultivars such as this are fruitless, male clones. ‘Blue Vase’ is a moderate grower that thrives in full sun and is not picky about soil fertility. It is intolerant of saturated ground, so any suitable planting location must be very well-drained. This juniper may be allowed to grow naturally as a single specimen, sheared to a more semiformal shape, or used as an evergreen screen or hedge.
