Juniper ‘Globosa Cinerea’ is a small to medium evergreen shrub with greenish blue-gray foliage on ascending branches. Its bright, evergreen color makes this shrub a powerful design tool for enlivening the low-maintenance landscape any time of year. Selected in 1915, it's derived from Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis), a highly variable species found throughout most of China, whose diversity of form has led to the creation of numerous cultivars of different shapes, sizes and color variations. 'Globosa Cinerea' looks very much like 'Blaauw', but instead develops a more uniform, rounded mature habit ('Blaauw' is irregular at maturity).
Junipers are low-maintenance shrubs which prefer full to part sun and are not picky about soil fertility or grittiness. Good drainage is essential, as they cannot tolerate saturated ground. The striking Globosa Cinerea juniper may be allowed to grow naturally as a single border specimen, trimmed to a more semiformal shape, or used as an evergreen screen or hedge plant if pruned back to keep it at a lower height.
