JUNIPERUS chinensis 'Kaizuka'
A cultivar originating from Japan, Juniperus chinensis ‘Kaizuka’, also known as Hollywood juniper, has long been a popular choice for Los Angeles bungalow gardens. Old specimens in that city illustrate just how beautiful these plants can be at maturity, despite drought and neglect. The thick, scaled, evergreen foliage of 'Kaizuka' is rich, dark green in color and displayed on irregularly twisting stems, adding visual texture to its upright, architectural form. An additional show of attractive, blue cones is displayed on both male and female forms of this variety.
Juniper ‘Kaizuka’ grows in almost any type of soil as long as it is sun-drenched and well-drained. It is notably salt tolerant, making it a good choice as a small-scale windbreak for exposed coastal homesites. ‘Kaizuka’ responds well to pruning, but is also attractive when allowed to grow into its natural shape. It makes an exceptional single specimen for both naturalistic gardens and spare, modern compositions, and is an ideal candidate for screens and hedges.
