Family

Cupressaceae

Botanical Name

JUNIPERUS chinensis 'Parsonii'

Plant Common Name

Chinese Juniper, Parson's Chinese Juniper

General Description

Lush, beautiful and tough as nails, juniper 'Parsonii' is an ideal problem-solver for many difficult sites. It is derived from Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis), a highly variable species found throughout China and Japan. Juniper's diversity of form has led to the creation of numerous cultivars of different shapes, sizes and color variations. Parson's juniper forms a low, wide-spreading mound of scaled, evergreen, blue-tinted foliage which is reported to hold its color well through the cold temperatures of winter. Small, blue, berry-like fruits appear on female plants, and are enjoyed by many birds.

Junipers are low-maintenance shrubs which prefer full sun and are not picky about soil fertility. Good drainage is essential, as they cannot tolerate saturated ground. The wide-spreading form and attractive, cool-toned foliage of ‘Parsonii’ make it a perfect groundcover choice for dry, difficult areas such as hillsides or unirrigated foundation beds.
