JUNIPERUS chinensis 'Spearmint'

Image of Juniperus chinensis 'Spearmint'

Mark A. Miller

Family

Cupressaceae

Botanical Name

JUNIPERUS chinensis 'Spearmint'

Plant Common Name

Chinese Juniper, Spearmint Chinese Juniper

General Description

The columnar form and lush, evergreen foliage of juniper ‘Spearmint’ make it an ideal problem-solver for filling narrow spaces. It is derived from Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis), a highly variable species found throughout China and Japan, whose diversity of form has led to the creation of numerous cultivars of different shapes, sizes and color variations. Female plants of this variety also produce a heavy crop of small, blue, berry-like fruit which is relished by many birds.

Junipers are low-maintenance shrubs which prefer full sun and are not picky about soil fertility. Good drainage is essential, as they cannot tolerate saturated ground. 'Spearmint' is a fine hedge, screen and windbreak juniper. It also makes an exceptional single specimen, or can be planted in small groups for a stronger architectural statement. The uniformity of this variety makes it perfect for planting in pairs flanking an entry or gateway.
