JUNIPERUS communis 'Effusa'
Common Juniper
‘Effusa’ features prostrate, woody branches covered with scaled, evergreen, blue-tinted foliage. It is a variety of common juniper (Juniperus communis): an adaptable, highly variable species found in a broad range of habitats throughout the northern hemisphere. Its diversity in form has led to the creation of numerous cultivars of different shapes, sizes and color variations. Female plants of common juniper produce small, bluish, berry-like fruits which have long been used as a flavoring for gin.
An easy, low-maintenance plant, ‘Effusa’ prefers full sun and average, well-drained soil. Although extremely cold-hardy, this variety is not as drought tolerant as many other junipers, and appreciates regular moisture. Its low, spreading form and attractive, blue-green foliage make it ideal for use as a groundcover for sunny locations.
