Family

Cupressaceae

Botanical Name

JUNIPERUS virginiana 'Cupressifolia'

Plant Common Name

Eastern Red Cedar

General Description

Offering good looks and remarkable resilience in the face of adversity, 'Cupressifolia' is a real work horse. This slow-growing juniper forms a tall pillar of lush, dark green foliage which looks beautiful year-round. It is a cultivar of eastern red cedar, a hardy, highly adaptable evergreen which is widespread and common across much of eastern North America.

Eastern red cedars require full sun and thrive in well-drained soil of low to moderate fertility. They are highly tolerant of drought, heat, cold, and poor, rocky soils, but cannot tolerate soggy conditions or standing water. More compact-growing than the species, ‘Cupressifolia’ is especially well-suited to residential homesites. It makes a fine screen or windbreak, and adds valuable vertical interest and year-round color to landscapes and gardens.
