JUNIPERUS virginiana 'Manhattan Blue'

Image of Juniperus virginiana 'Manhattan Blue'

Family

Cupressaceae

Botanical Name

JUNIPERUS virginiana 'Manhattan Blue'

Plant Common Name

Eastern Red Cedar, Manhattan Blue Eastern Red Cedar

General Description

This attractive juniper forms a broad, symmetrical pyramid laden with elegant, dark, blue-green foliage which beautifies landscapes year-round. It is a cultivar of eastern red cedar, a hardy, highly adaptable evergreen which is widespread and common across much of eastern North America. 'Manhattan Blue' is a male clone which does not produce the small, berry-like cones found on female plants.

Eastern red cedars require full sun and thrive in well-drained soil of low to moderate fertility. They are highly tolerant of drought, heat, cold, and poor, rocky soils, but cannot tolerate soggy conditions or standing water. The lush foliage and ample profile of ‘Mannhatan Blue’ make it a terrific choice for screens, hedges, or windbreaks. It is also beautiful when planted as a specimen or in large-scale mixed borders.
