Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

KERRIA japonica 'Chiba Gold'

Plant Common Name

Chiba Gold Japanese Kerria, Japanese Kerria

General Description

A suckering deciduous shrub from eastern Asia, Japanese kerria is valued for its yellow spring blooms and for its green stems that hold their color through winter. The cultivar 'Chiba Gold' has bright yellow spring foliage.

Of modest height and informal arching habit, this hardy shrub has oval, toothed leaves that flush golden-yellow in spring, fade to ivory-white in summer, and turn dull yellow in fall. The flowers – which resemble small single roses – appear in abundance in mid-spring, and often recur sparsely in summer. Plants sucker to form broad clumps.

This long-lived, carefree shrub prefers full to partial sun and thrives in fertile to average, well-drained soil. Once established, it will tolerate moderate periods of drought.

Plant Japanese kerria in a shrub border or along a foundation, or enjoy it as a specimen. Its evergreen stems bring a dash of color to winter gardens and flower arrangements.
