KERRIA japonica 'Honshu'
Honshu Japanese Kerria, Japanese Kerria
A suckering deciduous shrub from eastern Asia, Japanese kerria is valued for its yellow spring blooms and for its green stems that hold their color through winter. The cultivar 'Honshu' has relatively large flowers.
Of modest height, this hardy shrub has slender arching stems with oval, toothed, bright green leaves. The leaves turn dull yellow before dropping in fall, revealing the green stems. The flowers – which resemble small single roses – appear in abundance in mid-spring, and often recur sparsely in summer. Plants sucker to form broad clumps.
This long-lived, carefree shrub prefers full to partial sun and thrives in fertile to average, well-drained soil. Once established, it will tolerate moderate periods of drought.
Plant Japanese kerria in a shrub border or along a foundation, or enjoy it as a specimen. Its evergreen stems bring a dash of color to winter gardens and flower arrangements.
