LACTUCA sativa 'Reine Des Glaces'
Batavia, Crisphead Lettuce, Iceberg Lettuce, Queen of the Ice Lettuce, Reine Des Glaces Lettuce
A French heirloom variety of crisphead or iceberg lettuce, 'Reine des Glaces' develops a dense head of jagged, rich-green leaves that hold their crispness and flavor in hot weather. The plants are also relatively bolt-resistant.
This variety grows from seed to maturity in about 65 days. Leaves of immature plants can be used for "baby greens." Successive plantings every two weeks will yield a continual harvest as long as moderate weather prevails.
Crisphead/iceberg lettuce is an annual garden green grown for its rosettes of crunchy, flavorful leaves. The dense central head of cupped, thick-textured leaves is surrounded by a collar of large, lax leaves. Use the "head" for salads, or the outer leaves to zest up sandwiches. In hot weather, the whole leafy clump elongates and becomes bitter-flavored. When fully elongated it "bolts," producing tall branched stems covered with pale yellow flowers followed by fluffy white seedheads. Once plants begin to bolt, pull them or allow them to set seed for collection.
In temperate zones lettuce is favored as a spring and fall crop; in frost-free winter zones it is grown in winter. Full sun, rich well-drained soil, and regular water are needed for good production and performance.
