Helping You Become a More Successful Gardener
LACTUCA sativa( SALANOVA® SERIES)
Bearing heads that separate readily into individual leaves, lettuces in the Salanova® Series were developed by the vegetable breeders Rijk Zwaan, headquartered in The Netherlands. These butterhead and looseleaf lettuces form low, mounded rosettes of green or red leaves that radiate from the stem, like the petals of a double rose. The leaves of some varieties are deeply incised. Cut the base of the rosette and the leaves instantly separate. The seeds of these varieties are marketed only to commercial growers.
When temperatures warm up, the rosette stem elongates. At this stage it is no longer good eating. When fully elongated it "bolts," producing tall branched stems covered with pale yellow flowers, followed by fluffy white seedheads.
In temperate zones lettuce is favored as a spring and fall crop; in frost-free winter zones it is grown as a winter crop. Full sun, rich well-drained soil, and regular water are needed for good production and performance. Look for Salanova® lettuces at your local grocers.
