Family

Lythraceae

Botanical Name

LAGERSTROEMIA 'Biloxi'

Plant Common Name

Biloxi Crapemyrtle, Compact Crapemyrtle

General Description

The mildew-resistant deciduous shrub or tree ‘Biloxi’ is a hybrid crapemyrtle that blooms with large heads of powdery-pink flowers in summer and green leaves that turn orange-red and yellow in fall. It is an upright vase-shaped tree with slightly arching upper branches from each of the multiple trunks. Its smooth bark is decorative, mottled dark brown, cinnamon and tan.

Like other crapemyrtles, ‘Biloxi’ should be planted in a well-drained acidic to neutral soil. Full sun is mandatory for best flowering and overall plant fullness and form. This tree is quite drought tolerant once established.

For best growth, flowering, and fullness, plant 'Arapaho' in a well-drained, acidic soil to neutral soil and full sun. This small tree is quite drought- tolerant once established. You many tip-prune the spent flower clusters after the initial summer flowering to yield a smaller, second flowering results by early autumn. Such deadheading maintenance becomes impractical on larger plants. The practice of severely pruning the crowns of crapemyrtles, called "hatracking," is a harmful shortcut used by ill-trained landscapers and should be avoided. To control the size of the tree, remove oldest branches and shorten youngest stems by no more than 30 percent every year or two.
