Plant Common Name
Comanche Crapemyrtle, Hybrid Crapemyrtle
General Description
The Comanche crapemyrtle is a mildew-resistant deciduous shrub with pink to red-pink flowers in summer and orange-red to purple-red fall color. It is a tall, upright shrub that can be used as an accent plant or as an informal hedge or screen. 'Comanche' is exceptionally beautiful if trained into a small tree by removed the lowest branches.
Crapemyrtles should be planted in a well draining acidic to neutral soil. Full sun is mandatory for best flowering and overall plant fullness and form. This cultivar is quite drought-tolerant once established. Pruning should only be done to remove the spent branch tips after the summer flowering. Often a smaller, second flowering can result by early autumn. Severely pruning the crowns of crapemyrtles, often called hat-racking, is a bad and unhealthy landscapers' practice.
