Plant Common Name

Dazzle Me Pink Dwarf Crapemyrtle, Hybrid Crapemyrtle

General Description

Pretty bubblegum pink blooms grace the branches of Dazzle® Me Pink crapemyrtle from summer to fall. This is one of the earliest crapemyrtles to bloom. Its beautiful rounded leaves are dark olive green and turn lovely orange-red in the fall. This cultivar was selected by Michael Dirr in 1997 out of approximately 1,000 Lagerstroemia seedlings of unknown parentage.

Crapemyrtle is a heat-loving deciduous shrub that originates from Asia. It is best known for its large clusters of brightly colored blooms that appear at its branch tips in summer. Dazzle® Me Pink is a dwarf, mounding shrub with a spreading habit. It is mildew resistant, vigorous and has exfoliating bark that provides winter interest.

Tough and drought tolerant, this crapemyrtle thrives in full sun and withstands drought well once established. It is tolerant of a wide range of well-drained soil types, though slightly acid to neutral soils are preferred. Most crapemyrtles can withstand the aerosol salt and sandy soils near the sea. Conduct optional pruning on the branch tips after the initial summer flowering to coax a potential second flowering. Cutting back the plant severely in late winter appropriately rejuvenates this small shrub crapemyrtle.

Dazzle® Me Pink crapemyrtle is ideal for foundation plantings, mixed borders or large containers. It is pretty, easy to grow and offers big summer color when many other garden ornamentals are waning.
