Botanical Name
LAGERSTROEMIA 'Hopi'
Plant Common Name
Hopi Crapemyrtle, Hybrid Crapemyrtle
General Description
This crapemyrtle cultivar is a mildew-resistant, hybrid, deciduous shrub with eye-catching clusters of pink flowers in summer and more color in fall when the leaves turn orange-red to dark-red. It is a tall, upright, multi-stemmed shrub that can be used as an accent plant or as an informal hedge or screen.
Like most crapemyrtles, ‘Hopi' grows and flowers best in full sun to partial sun in well-drained average soil. Pruning the the spent branch tips after the first flowering often leads to a smaller, second flowering by early autumn. Severely pruning the crowns of crapemyrtles, called hat-racking, is a harmful, unhealthy landscaper's practice.
