Family

Botanical Name

LAGERSTROEMIA indica 'Country Red'

Plant Common Name

Country Red Crapemyrtle, Crapemyrtle

General Description

One of the oldest of crapemyrtle cultivars, ‘Country Red’ (also known as 'Pure Red') is a hardy, heat-loving, summer-flowering, large deciduous shrub descended from a species native to China. It is best known for its bright, blood-red flowers, which gather in loose clusters on the branch tips. Its leaves are dark green in spring and summer and then transition to a dulled yellow-orange in autumn. Mature plants may take, with some pruning, a beautiful vase-shape and will have attractive, exfoliating gray-brown bark, adding winter interest to the garden.

Like most crapemyrtles, ‘Country Red’ is tolerant of a wide range of soils, if well-drained, and grows best in hot, sunny locations. This tough, small tree works well for street plantings or as a specimen plant in mixed borders. In the coldest reaches of its hardiness zone, 'Country Red' will remain a smaller shrub as the branches die to the ground in winter and new stems rise from the roots each spring.
