Botanical Name
LAGERSTROEMIA indica( FLEMING FILLIGREES™ SERIES)
Plant Common Name
Crapemyrtle
General Description
The crapemyrtles in this series are about as dwarf as they come. Hybridized in Lincoln, Nebraska by the Fleming brothers, Fleming Filligree® cultivars are also hardier, heavy flowering and maintain densely-branched, uniform habits.
Crapemyrtles are heat-loving, summer flowering shrubs that originate from China. They are best known for their large clusters of brightly colored blooms that appear at the branch tips. Selections in the Fleming Filligree® series come in shades of coral, red and violet.
The glossy leaves emerge pale green to bronze in the spring, turn dark to medium green in the summer, then transition to bronze, yellow, orange or red in the fall. Normally, mature plants adopt a vase-shaped habit, but these compact plants stay bushy and low.
Crapemyrtles are tolerant of a wide range of well draining soil types and grow best in hot sunny locations. Once established, they are quite drought tolerant. Foliar powdery mildew can occasionally be a problem.
These small shrubs are ideal for massing in shrub or mixed borders. They are also well-suited to container plantings.
