Botanical Name
LAGERSTROEMIA indica 'Glowing Rose'
Plant Common Name
Crapemyrtle, Glowing Rose Crapemyrtle
General Description
This shrubby crapemyrtle, descended from a species native to China and Korea, is a deciduous shrub admired for its early show of pink flowers. Bloom starts in late spring in warmer climates and early summer in cooler climates. The flowers gather in loose clusters on the tips of the branches.
Like most crapemyrtles, ‘Glowing Rose’ tolerates a wide range of soils that are well-drained, and grows best in hot, sunny locations. Powdery mildew (a disfiguring leaf disease) may be a problem and can be diminished with good air flow, so give this shrub room. With its rounded silhouette and early bloom, ‘Glowing Rose’ is a sound choice for the mixed border or building foundation. Pruning can transform this shrub into an attractive small tree. Start with a young plant and from then on remove the low branches early and regularly.
