Lythraceae
Botanical Name
LAGERSTROEMIA indica 'Hope'
Plant Common Name
Dwarf Crapemyrtle
General Description
This semi-dwarf crapemyrtle is a fairly open branching, deciduous shrub that produces white to light pink flowers. From very early summer onward, 'Hope' produces pink buds and then pale pink blossoms in clusters on branch tips, many with red stems. It is a heat-loving plant that has green leaves with yellow-green undersides in the growing season, turning fully yellow and dropping relatively early in fall.
Crapemyrtle tolerates a wide range of well-drained soils and grows best in hot sunny locations. This cultivar has very good resistance to mildew, a leaf disease. 'Hope' is a low-maintenance, small shrub for the mixed border or foundation planting, where it will contribute early bloom and unusual leaf color.
