Lythraceae
Botanical Name
LAGERSTROEMIA indica 'Lafayette'
Plant Common Name
Crapemyrtle, Lafayette Crapemyrtle
General Description
Dwarf crapemyrtle 'Lafayette' is a miniature deciduous shrub with green leaves and a profusion of light lavender flowers in clusters at the tips of its branches. Flowering begins as early as the latter weeks of spring and continues until frost. You could say that 'Lafayette' is a heavy bloomer or even an "everbloomer". Pruning spent clusters encourages the next flush of bloom. In fall, the leaves turn shades of yellow, orange and red.
Like other dwarf crapemrytles, 'Lafayette' tolerates heat, drought, and almost any well-drained soil that is not hihgly alkaline. Adequate moisture, especially as plants begin to flower, is essential to maintain green leaves and produce full bloom. As 'Lafayette' is a very low-growing plant, it would be best planted en masse in foundation beds or in the foreground in mixed borders or rock gardens.
