LAGERSTROEMIA indica 'Mardi Gras'

Family

Lythraceae

Botanical Name

LAGERSTROEMIA indica 'Mardi Gras'

Plant Common Name

Dwarf Crapemyrtle

General Description

This crapemyrtle, 'Mardi Gras,' is a miniature weeping shrub with green leaves and a profusion of dark, pinkish-purple flowers in clusters. Bloom can start as early as the latter weeks of spring and continue until frost. Pruning spent clusters encourages the growth of new clusters. In fall, the leaves turn shades of yellow, orange and red. This selection is often regarded as part of the Petite Series, in which all members are dwarf shrubs.

Like other dwarf crapemrytles, 'Mardi Gras' tolerates heat, drought, and almost any well-drained soil that is not highly alkaline. Adequate moisture, especially as plants begin to flower, is essential to maintain green leaves and produce full bloom. As 'Mardi Gras' is a low-growing plant, almost a prostrate to creeping shrub, it would be best planted en masse in foundation beds or in the foreground in mixed borders or rock gardens.
