Family

Lamiaceae

Botanical Name

LAMIUM purpureum

Plant Common Name

Purple Archangel, Purple Deadnettle, Red Deadnettle

General Description

A highly weedy deadnettle, Lamium purpureum is Eurasian in origin but has spread throughout temperate regions worldwide and has become a common lawn and garden weed in North America. It is a low-growing annual spring bloomer that produces moderately attractive tiers of purplish flowers accented by purple and green leafy bracts. The foliage and flowers have a light, somewhat minty scent. Bees are drawn to the nectar-rich blooms.

This weedy member of the mint family forms mats of foliage and has square stems and leaves held in opposite pairs. The leaves are wrinkled, heart-shaped and edged with coarse teeth. Small, two-lipped, purplish pink flowers bloom in spring and are borne in whorls subtended by leafy bracts (petal-like leaves) of deep green and purple. After pollination by bees and other insects, many small seeds, or nutlets, are produced which fall to the ground to quickly colonize the surrounding area.

Generally, purple deadnettle can be found growing in full sun or partially shaded spots with fertile to average soil. They are very easy to pull or hoe. Be sure to remove plants before they set seed.
