Family
Verbenaceae
Botanical Name
Lantana montevidensis 'Mongen'(SUNNY DAZE®) PP10891
Plant Common Name
Trailing Lantana
General Description
The gold-edged leaves of this compact selection of trailing lantana contrast beautifully with its lavender-purple, yellow-eyed flowers. A spreading, evergreen, tender perennial that blooms year round in frost-free climates, trailing lantana is grown as an annual or container plant in temperate zones. It is native to warm regions of South America and naturalized in many other parts of the world.
The small, gray-green, oval leaves of 'Mongen' have an irregular creamy-gold border. The leaves are rough and leathery with toothed edges. Crushed leaves release a strong, rather unpleasant fragrance. The small, tubular blooms are borne in rounded clusters. This relatively slow-growing cultivar gradually forms a 10-inch- (25-cm-) high, 4-foot- (120-cm-) wide mound.
This sun- and heat-loving perennial requires well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It withstands hard pruning and is quite drought tolerant and trouble free once established. Deadhead plants to increase bloom and prevent fruiting. In frost-free zones, trailing lantana makes an attractive, everblooming groundcover for sunny slopes or mixed borders. In areas with cold winters it works well as a bedding or container annual. It is perfect for draping from a hanging basket or wall.
This species is considered invasive in some tropical and subtropical areas. It may pose health risks; see http://www.caf.wvu.edu/~forage/library/poisonous/page10.htm .
