Botanical Name

LEUCANTHEMUM x superbum 'Aglaia'

Plant Common Name

Shasta Daisy

General Description

The fringed flowers of ‘Aglaia’ really stand out in the border. This semi-double Shasta daisy is vigorous, pretty and easy to grow. This hybrid between Leucanthemum lacustre and L. maximum is a dependable herbaceous perennial perfect for sunny early season flower borders.

In spring, Shasta daisy puts forth a dense low-growing clump of glossy, lance-shaped, toothed leaves. In early summer these give rise to tall upright leafy stems topped with large white daisies with deep yellow centers. These bloom for a discrete period of time and spent flower stalks should be cut to the ground once flowering halts.

Plants flower best in full sun and moderately rich well-drained soil. Their upright habit and neutral flowers make them easy to design with. The only caveat to planting Shastas is the gap they create in the late season border. It is necessary to plant later flowering ornamentals around them to keep the garden lively with color. Shastas also make great long-lasting cutflowers and ‘Aglaia’ boasts an extra long vase-life when cut.
