This olive tinged silver leaf is closely related to Texas ranger, but a shorter stature means it is more versatile in the landscape. It is native to foothills and dry washes of the extreme southwest and Mexico, preferring sloping limestone soils of sandy gravelly texture. It offers yet another beautiful flowering evergreen to flesh out dry desert gardens.
The small trumpet shaped blue flowers are widely scattered across the foliage, blooming with the coming of summer humidity and thunderstorms. Plants are much wider than they are tall, offering a spreading form to fill barren ground where it is too hot for less rugged species. Use to create a casual cottage garden character with desert perennials in the spring, or reserve for compositions with cacti and succulents in the hardcore desert garden. Despite its cast iron constitution, beware of frequent watering, particularly were soils aren’t fast to drain.
