Family

Portulacaceae

Botanical Name

Lewisia 'Little Plum'

Plant Common Name

Hybrid Lewisia

General Description

This seed-grown hybrid is prized not only for its showy flowers but also for its relative tolerance of damp conditions.

This hardy perennial forms rosettes of leathery, lance-shaped, evergreen leaves that grow from a stout taproot. Airy clusters of rosy violet, 8-petaled blooms are borne on low, slender, branching stems from mid to late spring, and sometimes again in late summer. The flowers have purple veins and salmon-orange undertones.

Grow 'Little Plum' in full to partial sun and gritty, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil. It does best in sites that receive neither hot sun nor excessive moisture (a north- or east-facing wall is ideal). Plants often benefit from a gravel mulch (avoid water-absorbent mulches such as composted bark). Remove spent leaves and crowded growth to promote good air circulation. This relatively moisture-tolerant cultivar makes a good choice for regions with damp winters (such as the Northeast United States). Use it in rock gardens, troughs, and wall plantings.
