James H. Schutte

Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

LIGULARIA dentata 'Desdemona'

Plant Common Name

Big-Leaved Ligularia

General Description

Ligularia ‘Desdemona’ sports huge leaves which emerge with purple-red and mature to a rich bronze-green with purple undersides, masses of yellow-orange flowers and a love for moist, shady conditions. The herbaceous perennial is native to China and Japan and forms impressive clumps in the garden. The heart-shaped to roundish, dark leaves are produced on distinctive reddish-purple long petioles and are as attractive as the flowers. Long stalks rising well above the leaves hold masses of shaggy, daisy-like flowers in flat-topped loose groups. Flowers are produced in the summer.

Plant ‘Desdemona’ on the shanded side of the house or in bogs, woodland areas, at pond edges, or any location with cool, moist, rich, humusy soil. Protect the plants from the hot sun, strong winds and slugs and snails. A thrifty perennial, it seldom needs division. Plant in masses, mulch well and group together with other water-loving plants for conservation.
