LILIUM 'Lake Carey'
Lake Carey Lily, Oriental Lily
The bold Oriental lily ‘Lake Carey’ bears an abundance of deep rosy red flowers with no speckling and bright orange anthers. This tall summer bloomer has flowers that are large and fragrant. It was bred in The Netherlands by Nicolaas A. M. Mak.
Oriental lilies result from complex crosses of several Asian lily species. They are renowned for their large, flaring, bowl-shaped blooms. The blooms are often spotted, intensely fragrant and have distinctive hairs at the base of the tepals. They are borne atop upright stems lined with glossy green, narrow, lance-shaped leaves. Once they have flowered they will not bloom again until the following year, so be sure to plant them with ornamentals that look great later in the season.
Lilies prefer full to partial sun and neutral, well-drained, humus-rich soil. They grow from scaled bulbs that are easily planted. The typical depth is eight inches for Orientals. Enjoy them in perennial borders, large containers and cutting gardens; anywhere where their color and fragrance can be appreciated. The anthers should be removed from cut flowers because their colorful pollen will shed and stain fabrics.
