LILIUM 'Starburst Sensation'
Far East Lily, Starburst Sensation Lily
This entry has yet to be reviewed and approved by L2G editors.
The regal and regarded ‘Starburst Sensation’ bears huge, fragrant, outward facing but pendent, pink blooms with red-streaked petals. These wide-opening flowers are borne in succession towards late summer on tall, dark, sturdy stems lined with lance-shaped green foliage. This hybrid was bred by Dr. Wilbert Ronald in Canada.
Orienpet lilies are produced by hybridizing trumpet lilies (in this case Lilium speciosum) and Oriental lilies. They tend to have large, broad, trumpet-shaped flowers with a strong sweet fragrance. Once they have flowered they will not bloom again until the following year, so be sure to plant them with ornamentals that look great later in the season.
This lily excels with full to partial sun and neutral, well-drained, humus-rich soil. It grows from scaled bulbs that are easily planted; a typical planting depth is eight inches for orienpets. Marvelous beauties like ‘Starburst Sensation’ are ideal for perennial borders, large containers and cutting gardens; anywhere where their color and fragrance can be appreciated. Remove the anthers (pollen pods) of the cut flowers when brought inside as they will stain fabrics.
