Family
Caprifoliaceae
Botanical Name
Linnaea borealis
Plant Common Name
Twinflower
General Description
Found in cool forests throughout much of the Northern Hemisphere, this carpeting evergreen is well worthy of bearing the name of Linnaeus, father of modern botany. In spring and early summer, pairs of delicate, fragrant, pale pink flowers dangle from short wiry stems, above low mats of small, shiny, rounded leaves. Twinflowers spread vigorously in favorable conditions.
Give this dainty woodlander a cool, moist, humus-rich, acid soil in partial shade. Mulch the surrounding soil with shredded oak or pine leaves to encourage spreading. Use twinflower for groundcover or edging in the woodland garden, or grow it in large containers. It is especially nice where it can be viewed (and smelled) at close quarters.
