Yellow Flax
Bearing cheerful yellow blossoms atop upright stems cloaked in linear dark green leaves, yellow flax is a pretty, easy-to-grow European wildflower for the garden. This tough, spring/summer blooming perennial is native to the open, dry grasslands of southern and Central Europe. The most popular, garden-worthy selection is 'Compactum', which forms very tidy, compact clumps.
The dense, dark green foliage is lance-shaped and covers the upright stems. In early summer the stem tips become decorated with bright yellow, five-petaled, funnel-shaped blossoms. These open in sunshine and are pollinated by bees and other insects. Small, bulbous seed capsules filled with small seeds are produced. Once the fine seeds are released, they will often germinate to form new plants.
Grow yellow flax full sun and porous soil with average fertility and a neutral pH. Avoid wet or clay-rich soils as excess root moisture will quickly kill plants. Yellow flax is quick to flower, so be sure to plant it among other ornamentals that offer interest through summer and fall. This delicate beauty looks best in mixed borders or cottage gardens. 'Compactum' is well-suited to rockeries. Plants started from seed will not bloom until the second year.
