Liriope muscari 'Big Blue'
Big Blue Lilyturf
This popular, clump-forming perennial groundcover produces lilac flower spikes in late summer that stand tall above the foliage.
A grass-like evergreen perennial, ‘Big Blue’ lilyturf originates from the forests of eastern Asia. Its dark green leaves are long and narrow and the plants grow in lax, fast-spreading clumps. It has spikes of lilac flowers that appear in late summer. These are followed by black berry-like fruits that appear in fall, which are eaten and spread by birds.
Lilyturf grows best in good soil with average moisture but tolerates poor soils and dry conditions. One of its greatest benefits is its shade tolerance. It grows readily in partial or full shade and creates a good groundcover under trees. The evergreen leaves can appear weather beaten with time. When this happens it is best to shear or mow plants back in fall or early spring to allow new fresh leaves to emerge.
There are several caveats to planting lilyturf. It spreads vegetatively and readily self-sows, so it can be invasive if it appears where it is not wanted. It has also become naturalized in several of the southern United States.
