Family

Liliaceae

Botanical Name

Liriope muscari(NEW BLUE™)

Plant Common Name

Big Blue Lilyturf, New Blue Lilyturf

General Description

The exceptional big blue lilyturf, New Blue™, has very dark green foliage and particularly dense, pretty lavender flowers. It forms neat clumps and is said to be so tamed and attractive it will win over even the hardest lilyturf skeptic.

Big blue lilyturf is a grass-like evergreen perennial originating from the forests of eastern Asia. Its dark green leaves are long and narrow and grow in lax, fountain-like, moderately-spreading clumps. It has spikes of soft lavender-violet flowers that appear in late summer, These are partially masked by the foliage and followed by dark blue, berry-like fruits.

Lilyurf grows best in good soil with average moisture but tolerates poor soils and dry conditions. One of its greatest benefits is its shade tolerance. It grows readily in partial or full shade and creates a good groundcover under trees. The leaves are evergreen but with time can appear weather beaten. To keep plants looking fresh each season, shear or mow plants back in fall or early spring to allow new fresh looking leaves to emerge in mid-spring. It spreads vegetatively and creates a dense clump. It may self-sow, but it isn't as invasive as the similar-looking Muscari spicata.
