Family

Liliaceae

Botanical Name

Liriope muscari 'Pee Dee Ingot'

Plant Common Name

Big Blue Lilyturf

General Description

The sunny yellow-green leaves of 'Pee Dee Ingot ' are much brighter than your average dark-leaved lilyturf. A grass-like evergreen perennial, lilyturf originates from the forests of eastern Asia. It has long, blade-like leaves that grow in lax, fountain-like, spreading clumps. This selection has small spikes of lavender flowers that appear in late summer. These are followed by black berry-like fruits that appear in fall and are eaten and spread by birds.

Lilyturf grows best in good soil with average moisture but tolerates poor soils and dry conditions. One of its greatest benefits is its shade tolerance. It grows readily in partial shade or full shade and makes a good groundcover under trees, where it can shed a little needed light. The evergreen leaves can appear weather beaten with time. When this happens it is best to shear or mow plants back in fall or early spring to allow new fresh leaves to emerge. It spreads vegetatively and creates a dense clump. It may self-sow, but it isn't as invasive as the similar-looking Muscari spicata.
