Liriope muscari 'Silver Midget'
Big Blue Lilyturf
As the name suggests, this is a small cultivar of big blue lilyturf with leaves edged or streaked in shades of deep green, pale green and white. The grassy blades are long and narrow, growing in a lax, fountain-like clump. In summer, violet flowers rise on stalks above the leaves. On older plants the leaves may partly hide the flowers and the black fruits that follow in late summer. The leaves are evergreen but with time may become weather beaten. Remove them in spring before the new leaves emerge.
Lilyurf grows best in good soil with average moisture, but it tolerates poor soil and dry conditions. It grows readily in partial or full shade and so makes a good groundcover under trees, where 'Silver Midget' adds glints of brightness. Plant as a groundcover or edger but keep in mind that variegated lilyturf forms are slower growing than green. Weather beaten leaves may be mowed or sheared back in late winter or spring to make way for a new flush of foliage. It spreads vegetatively and creates a dense clump. It may self-sow, but it isn't as invasive as the similar-looking Muscari spicata.
