Family

Lobeliaceae

Botanical Name

LOBELIA erinus

Plant Common Name

Bedding Lobelia, Edging Lobelia

General Description

Usually grown as an annual, edging lobelia is a heavy blooming tender perennial that originates from South Africa. It prefers cool weather and will bloom continuously all season if the days are long and the growing conditions favorable.

There are many popular cultivars of edging lobelia. Some are compact but most are distinguished by different flower colors. From spring to fall they produce masses of small, charming tubular flowers with three prominent lobes and white throats. These may be white, rose, dark lilac-blue, sky blue or bicolored. The blooms appear on low trailing plants with fine green leaves.

Edging lobelia prefers full to partial sun and well-drained soil that is moist and fertile. It is not tolerant of high heat. During hot spells it may partially die back but will revive and re-bloom as the weather cools. This is an excellent plant for border edges, rock gardens, containers and hanging baskets.
