General Description

This native to extreme southern Canada and the northern tier of the United States is an herbaceous perennial that is found growing in the moist soils along ponds and rivers, including bogs.

Variable in its mature height, it usually has a basal clump of oblong oval leaves that are medium green. In mid to late summer, stems grow either barely or very high above the foliage and hold bicolored lavender/light blue and white blossoms in airy clusters. The flower is five-petaled: three downward petals with a white throat and two reduced upward petals that look like ears.

Grow brook lobelia in average to saturated soils in full to partial sun. Soil should be deep and fertile, acidic to mildly alkaline in pH. It can be use as a shoreline wildflower along lakes, ponds and streams, or as part of a bog garden. Do not harvest these perennials from the wild as they are often considered endangered. Cultivar 'Blue Shadow' has flowers that are deep blue and white.
