Family

Caprifoliaceae

Botanical Name

LONICERA periclymenum 'Scentsation' PP16240

Plant Common Name

European Honeysuckle, Scentsation European Honeysuckle

General Description

Here is the beautiful European honeysuckle vine in the form of a new cultivar, ‘Scentsation,’ more floriferous and fragrant than its parent, which is native to Europe and North Africa, with wide adaptability to both temperate climates and hot, dry regions. The parent has naturalized in the United States where it is known as woodbine and is considered an invasive plant, but ‘Scentsation’ is a manageable vine in the garden. Its lush mid-green leaves line beige stems that twine their way upwards when given an arbor or nearby tree.

The exceptionally fragrant, tubular flowers are ivory to creamy yellow, and borne in generous clusters.. They bloom from spring to early summer and are followed by red to orange berry-like fruits that are attractive and may remain after leaves fall, ideal for cutting to make beautiful, bright, berry runners to enjoy indoors over the holidays. Birds relish the berries too and help to spread seed which readily sprouts. This vigorous vine can tolerate a wide range of soils and light-levels. It can be invasive and requires regular pruning to control its shape and size. Grow this vine on a fence, trellis or arbor for many seasonal rewards from a plant that asks for little in return.
