Privet Honeysuckle
This is a unique, low-growing, evergreen honeysuckle with fragrant flowers, fine texture, and bright fruits. It is used primarily as a groundcover. This species is native to China. Dense and well branched, it produces minute, leathery, oval, dark green leaves similar to those of the privets. The leaves are held opposite one another in pairs that are closely-spaced on long, stiff, horizontal branches. The foliage retains its green throughout the winter months. This fast-growing plant can spread over a large area, making a first class cover for beauty and erosion control.
The small, funnel shaped, white flowers appear at the end of spring. They are quite fragrant and later give way to violet blue translucent berries. These fruits are not only bright and decorative, they are relished by birds. This shrub is renowned for thriving in a wide variety of conditions from heat to cold, moist to dry and in any soil that is well drained. It is notably tolerant of salt spray and makes a fine candidate for seaside banks and slope coverage. Though little known, this is a great problem solver for difficult sites that need cover.
