General Description

Leathery, lush green leaves, pretty white flowers and colorful bark are the ornamental strengths of the Brisbane box. A great tree for urban conditions, this evergreen is native to the eastern Australian states of New South Wales and Queensland. It attains an oval shaped canopy on top of an upright trunk and branches.

The leaves are oval to lance-shaped and leathery, held in whorls. When young they are glossy light green to red and mature to a bright, medium to dark green. In late spring and summer, small clusters of three to seven star-shaped white flowers appear at branch tips, often just under newly emerging leaves. The brown fruits that later form are shaped like a top, or like those of any eucalyptus tree. The bark is orange-tan and flakes away to reveal lighter shades.

Grow Brisbane box in full sun and moist, acidic or neutral soils for is fastest and best growth. However, this plant has many tolerances: smog, wet sites, soil compaction, and drought once established. Only avoid alkaline soils (to lessen chances of chlorosis nutritional deficiency) and constantly windy spots. Use this tree as a street tree or park grove. It is also a terrific urban lawn and shade tree.
